Draining excess hot fats from frying and cooking vessels is often messy and can be extremely dangerous. Instead of using a spoon, ladle or baster to remove the hot liquid, use an unscented paper towel to soak it up, and simply toss it in the trash or an empty food container. Using cooking tongs to hold the paper towel, you can easily blot up as little or as much as you like, without the risk of spilling, splattering or fire, and the oil soaked towels aren't as troublesome as containers of liquid.
